Artist Statement for ‘MARKS ON CLOTH’ retrospective 2006 To be able to put most of my work together in one show, to me, is one of the highlights of my long quiltmaking life. The collection is just a small part of what I have done in the last 30 years of stitching. I focus on events and attitudes of the day, with many of my works catching the viewer off guard. Most of the works need to have that second look, to understand what is actually meant by the work. I do not like to give the piece a name that does not involve any thinking on the part of the viewer. I am a non-conformist and have become quite radical with time. It is combined with the courage to push the personal and technical boundaries in a search for new areas. This is limited only by the rate of movement towards new horizons, spiritual and professional. Most of my works are coloured by what ‘Mother Nature’ gives me. “Marks on Cloth” have come from the environment that I am working in at the time, as is the subject matter. |
